The Crystal Sculptures
The technique of working with glass has existed since Antiquity. With the advent of Art Nouveau it gained a newfound primacy. One of the key players in this new movement was Daum from the Nancy School. Founded in 1878, and working from first materials, the house of Daum produced innovations in the production of crystal. Their unique process created objects that featured a remarkable translucence, brilliance, finely nuanced color, and intense moiré effects. Daum was selected to produce seventeen of Braque’s works, all coming from the Metamorphoses gouache sketches.
